VIVAnews - Greenpeace reprimanded the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), palm oil industry board, for failing to take action against companies that continue to destroy Indonesian forests and peat soil.
Greenpeace of Southeast Asia's campaign runner told VIVAnews today, 21 November, that recently a Greenpeace team found new evidence of deforestation and peat soil damage committed by companies having RSPO membership.
"Last week, Greenpeace issued the third report showing that United Plantations, the first company certified by RSPO, has destroyed peat soil in Central Kalimantan," said Bustar.
Therefore, Bustar went on, for the last 12 months, Greenpeace has issued two reports: 'Frying the Climate' and 'Burning Up Borneo.'
"The report shows that key RSPO members, whose plantations are not yet certified, are actively involved in damaging tropical forest," he said.
To deal with the rapid deforestation rate in Indonesia as well as today's climate crisis, strong leadership in the global business society is very important.
However, RSPO has complete failed in responding to the challenge. 'Environmentally friendly' palm oil will continue to be a lie, while RSPO has been clearly a weak and ineffective industrial agency, said Bustar Maitar.
Greenpeace called upon RSPO to support immediate moratory of deforestation as well as peat soil utilization, and to annul the membership of companies failing to fulfill the moratory commitment.
Greenpeace also indicated that the Indonesian government apply moratory, or temporary halt, to every forest conversion soon, including extension of palm oil plantation, logging industry and all forms of efforts attempting deforestation.
